Timeline of German Valley
1730s
Moving
Early European settlers begin moving into the valleys of western Morris County, following Native American trails along the South Branch of the Raritan River.
1740–1743
Dutch Valley Settlement
German-speaking immigrants traveling through Philadelphia begin settling the fertile valley that will become known as Dutch Valley or German Valley.
1743
Logan Tract Established
The Logan Tract, containing about 1,813 acres of land in the valley, is established and later subdivided among several pioneer families.
1748–1749
Farms Acquired
Several founding settlers acquire farms in the valley, including Johannes Peter Scharpenstein, Philip Weise, Tunis Trimmer, William Welsch, Leonard Nachbar, and Matthias Trimmer.
1748–1749
First Store/Tavern
John Peter Neitzer establishes the first store and tavern in the village, creating an early commercial center.
Before 1751
Grist Mill and Saw Mill constructed
A grist mill and saw mill are constructed along the South Branch of the Raritan River, providing essential services for local farmers.
1750
Early Stone House Built
Tunis Trimmer builds one of the earliest stone houses in the township, still standing today.
1765
Dutch Valley
Records refer to the settlement as Dutch Valley, a name likely derived from the German word Deutsch.
1774
Old Union Church (Old Stone Church) Built
The Old Union Church (Old Stone Church) is built by Lutheran and Dutch Reformed congregations, replacing an earlier log church.
1775–1783
"Crossroads of the Revolution"
During the American Revolution, New Jersey becomes known as the “Crossroads of the Revolution.” Residents of the valley witness troop movements and wartime activity throughout the region.
1798
Washington Township Established
Washington Township is officially established, becoming the first township in New Jersey named in honor of George Washington.
Early 1800s
A Growing Community
Agriculture, milling, tanning, blacksmithing, and trade support the growing rural community.
1810
First Stone Bridge Constructed
The first stone bridge is constructed over the South Branch of the Raritan River, replacing the earlier ford used by wagons and travelers.
1832
Presbyterian Church Built
A Presbyterian Church is built near the Trimmer property as the community continues to grow.
Mid–1800s
Settlement
German Valley develops into a small regional center with stores, mills, taverns, and churches serving surrounding farms.
Late 1800s
Local Commerce Grows
Railroads and improved roads connect rural communities with larger markets, gradually transforming local commerce.
1917–1918
Long Valley
The village name German Valley is officially changed to Long Valley during World War I.
